Chapter Eleven

Our first stop was at Ms Bell’s house. She was expecting us and answered the door faster than a woman her age should be able to. I’m not sure who got the bigger surprise, Ms Bell or Gage as they were both extremely distressed by the other’s unexpected appearance.

After starting at each other for several minutes, Gage was the one to back down. He dropped his gaze and gave the older woman a half bow. “My lady. Please excuse our interruption. I am here with Flora to inspect the fairy ring in your garden. I did not know that you were here.”

She regarded him with her piercing eyes, giving him a look similar to the one that made me wet my pants as a child, then spoke. “No harm done child, however I value my anonymity. No others are to know I live here. Flora, as you have probably realised, I am not exactly human. That is all you need to know for the moment. You may tell the other Keepers, they may have need of my help, but no others.”

“Of course. Your secret is safe with me.” I was bursting with questions, but knew better than to antagonise an ancient Fae who had remained hidden in our town for decades. “May we test my potion on the Fairy ring in your garden?”

“Please, come through and we shall see what effect it has on the blasted things. Nothing I am capable of made a difference, which is why I came to you. The last thing we need is to draw attention to the town and reveal it to those who would like to use the ley lines for their own purposes.”

We followed her through the house to the garden at the rear and exited through double doors in her bright conservatory. The ring was large, about a meter across, and the mushrooms were a decent size as well. I reached out with my magic, not having to hide it from Ms Bell now, and was aware of the substantial root system of this ring reaching out towards her neighbour’s lawns, it’s intent to join with more of its own kind now apparent.

“This one is still a single ring, but its mycelium is stretching out to grow elsewhere or to find the rest of its kind. It’s an excellent test case. If we can stop it in its tracks, then we can use this potion on the others.” I took a bottle out of my pocket and pulled the cork out. “Please step back, this has concentrated Rowan berries in it. I don’t want to risk either of you getting splashed with it.”

I carefully poured the liquid over the mushrooms and took great pleasure in hearing them sizzle when it hit them. I thanked the goddess that there was enough to cover the entire ring of mushrooms and a little left to spare. Once I had doused them in the Rowan and bicarbonate of soda mixture, I stood back to watch what was happening.
